Through the Decades: Cheese-tastic Christmas Music

Christmas is fast approaching and with it an abundance of cheesy songs to bop along to during this festive time of year. While we have the ‘classics’, from your standard carols to ‘Do they know it’s Christmas’, there are many cheesy videos and songs that must be experienced from every decade. Some you may recognise, others you may not, either way these corny Christmas picks are perfect for some festive fun!

70’s

Artist: Elmo & Patsy
Title: Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer
Release Date: 1979

One of the silliest Christmas songs known to man, “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” was a popular 70’s number, this video came later- either in the 80’s or 90’s, equally as weird!

Artist: Paul McCartney
Title: Wonderful Christmas Time Release
Date: 1979

Classic song, pretty cheesy, but then what Christmas song isn’t? The video, on the other hand, is in league of its own- we’re not sure ‘weird’ covers it. If you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely an amusing one to watch!

80’s

Artist: Wham!
Title: Last Christmas Release
Date: 1986

Well, this one had to make the cheese list. We all love it, hate it, and pretty much can’t make it through a Christmas without at least one listen, voluntary or otherwise. The video is spectacularly 80’s cheese, enjoy!

Title: I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

Who doesn’t want to hear a folk-rock version of this song? Got to love the cheesy 80’s dance moves, along with the white trainers and socks combo!

90’s

Artist: ‘N Sync
Title: Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays
Release Date: 1998

The 90’s were overflowing with cheesy Christmas songs but this N Sync one is definitely a top choice - song, video, 90’s fashion, JT’s frosted tips- all a cheese-tastic treat.

Artist: Mariah Carey
Title: All I want for Christmas
Release Date: 1994

This song and video had to be included, iconic and utterly cheesy, no Christmas is complete without listening to this number. Sing along, you know you want to… “All I want for Christmas is youuuuuuuuu!”

00’s

Artist: Billy Idol
Title: Jingle Bell Rock
Release Date: 2006

This one is just too funny and nearly off the cheese-factor scale. King of ‘Punk Rock’ Billy Idol is a legend…but this video has, ahem, moved in a different direction. Watch out for the facial expressions - hilarity may ensue. We still love you Billy.
